True Freedom

In light of July 4th and the celebration of freedom I have been pondering what freedom really is.

Is freedom living in America?
Is it having rights?
Is it being free of authority?
Is it doing as you please?

It's something everyone wants right?
I mean, young people live to express it, religious groups claim to be it, political people fight for it, and our soldiers die for it but what is it?

If freedom is simply doing as we please then is it also freedom when we cause future generations to suffer from the consequences?

Somehow things aren't adding up?
If we are as free as we claim to be then why are so many people in bondage?

Our government is in debt.
Our prisons overflowing.
Our young people suicidal.
Our streets are unsafe.
Our borders packed with drug traffic.

Does this sound like freedom to you?
If they are free then why are they looking for an escape?

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate very much the liberties that we have here in America and I am thankful to those who gave their lives for what we so often take for granted but I believe there is still something missing in this so called free country.

What if it's the Truth that we are missing?

John 8:32 NLT
And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Maybe the freedom that we seek is actually a freedom from ourselves.
A freedom from our self destructive habits and guilt.
A freedom from the ugly that rises up inside and devours our peace causing us dissatisfaction, to hate, to lust, to kill
The freedom from relentlessly trying to beat our sin ridden souls into something desirable but lacking the will power.

That kind of freedom actually exists.
His name is Jesus.

John 14:6 NLT
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

John 8:36 NLT
So if the Son sets you free, you are TRULY free.

Colossians 1:13-14 NLT
For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.

1 John 5:11 NLT
And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

2 Corinthians 3:17 NLT
For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

Ephesians 1:7 NLT
He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.

Isaiah 49:9 NLT
I will say to the prisoners, ‘Come out in freedom,’
and to those in darkness, ‘Come into the light....

That my friends is Freedom in the true sense of the word.
